Handle a suspicious SMS safely

Delivery, toll, bank and account messages often use a tiny payment or urgent warning to make you tap a malicious link.

Warning signs

  • The message asks for a small delivery or toll payment you did not expect.
  • A shortened or unfamiliar domain is used instead of the organisation’s normal site.
  • The sender name looks official but the message still contains an external payment or login link.
  • The text threatens immediate fees, cancellation or account suspension.

What to do

  1. Do not tap the SMS link. Open the courier, bank or service through its official app.
  2. If the message names an order, compare it with an order you actually made.
  3. Block and report the sender after you have preserved any evidence you need.
Test yourself
